Marty Warhola - Artist/Printmaker

Marty Warhola, nephew of famed artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), is an artist in his own right. Utilizing the printing method that was a hallmark of both his uncle’s and his father Paul’s work, Warhola has created images that mirror the Pop icon subjects and famous historical figures that can be found in many of Warhol’s screenprint portraits.

Warhola’s talk will include a discussion of his life and work, and he will also share stories of his father and his famous uncle. The program will include a question and answer period.

Marty Warhola’s work will be featured in an upcoming Butler exhibition. His portraits of Presidents Washington and Lincoln are currently on view at the Butler.

Burton Silverman - Portrait Painter

Burton Silverman is noted for his commissioned portraits of distinguished persons in government and the private sector. His portraits have been featured many times on the covers of Time Magazine, and from 1964 through 1994, more than 125 of his portraits were featured in the Profiles segment of the New Yorker magazine.

Silverman was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1974, and to the prestigious Society of Illustrator’s Hall of Fame in 1990. He is a member of the Pastel Society of America Hall of Fame.

Silverman’s drawings will be on view this spring in an exhibition titled “The Intimate Eye” at the Butler in Youngstown beginning in March, 2007.

Michael Kimmelman - Art Critic

Michael Kimmelman is the longtime chief art critic for The New York Times and a contributor to the New York Review of Books. Time Magazine describes his latest
book, The Accidental Masterpiece: On the Art of Life and Vice Versa, as a "transcendent experience." In this publication Kimmelman argues against ideology, and for the benefits of open eyes and an open mind when viewing art. (The book was named a notable book of the year for 2005 by The Times.) Kimmelman is also author of Portraits: Talking with Artists at the Met, the Modern, the Louvre and Elsewhere, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize.

Kimmelman’s latest book is available in
the Butler’s Museum Gift Shop.
