The exhibition, George Mauersberger: Pastel Drawings 1991 – 2016 is a compilation of Mauersbergers realistic drawings depicting everyday items arranged in an extraordinary way. With their detailed rendering, these drawings have a living quality, illustrating presence without portraying a specific person. His nationally recognized work is award winning and has been exhibited since 1995.
One of Cleveland’s best in capturing details of every day still life’s, George Mauersberger has been exploring genres using pastels since 1991 during his fourth year of teaching drawing at Cleveland State University. The notion of contrast between traditional formal concerns and materials vs. contemporary media and ideas drives his work.
While being well known for his drawings on paper and occasionally walls, Mauersberger works with ink, charcoal, pastels, graphite, and watercolor to create realistic images. His artistic process usually involves working in a series focusing on a particular theme or technique. His interest in drapery, led him to create drawings of various types of clothing, such as his USA Leather series.
“A wise older artist once observed, “Drawing is thinking.” That is what I aspire to, I think.” ~ George Mauersberger
