Artist Statement

This exhibition covers most of the subjects in my work over several decades because I have often made a pastel study before starting an oil painting. Pastel sticks come in a vast array of hues, offering readily at hand color choices, and diverse options can be quickly explored.

I have always been attracted to the house in my work, with its suggestion of identity, shelter and memories. More recently, the subtlety and warmth of color in the Italian environment led to the pieces I made following the month I spent at the American Academy in Rome.

Water is clearly another recurring theme I have explored; it can evoke many reactions. The sometimes presence of a curtain in the image changes the scene from solely landscape, suggesting a human presence, perhaps from within a home, with all its intimate emotions.

In all of my work, the simple strength and certainty of architectural form is a counterpoint to the complexity and uncertainty of nature.

Bio

Alice Dalton Brown earned her B.A. degree from Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. She has had thirty solo exhibitions of her work in New York City, nationally, and internationally. Her work appears in numerous public collections including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Springfield Art Museum, Springfield, Missouri, which offered the artist’s first retrospective in 1999, and the Johnson Museum of Art, Ithaca, New York, which organized a survey of the artist’s work in 2013. In 2018 The Butler  Institute of American Art presented a solo exhibition of her paintings. She is represented by Eckert Gallery, Kent, CT.
