About The Art
This traveling exhibition showcases a body of work that represents a quarter of a century of Clyde Butcher’s photographic expeditions into the American Everglades. Organized by Clyde Butcher Galleries, these 35 black and white photographs transport visitors to this once fragile, yet resilient, ecosystem with their impressive dimensions, stunning detail, fluid composition, and astonishing clarity. Through the breathtaking images Butcher presents in Everglades, the viewer is beckoned into the image and becomes part of this mysterious and primeval place rarely seen by humans. Butcher’s goal for this exhibition is to evoke a love for this endangered national treasure and awaken viewers to preserve and protect all of our coutry’s natural places for future generations.
Artist’s Statement
“Wilderness, to me, is a spiritual necessity. When my son was killed by a drunken driver, it was to the wilderness that I fled in hopes of regaining my serenity and equilibrium. The mysterious spiritual experience of being close to nature helped restore my soul. It was during that time I discovered the intimate beauty of the environment.
My experience reinforced my sense of dedication to use my art form, photography, to show people that therre is a unity between all undisturbed natural places, whether a peak of a renowned mountain range or a stream bed in an urban watershed. My hope is to educate…to let people know our land is a special place and to inspire others to work together to save nature’s places of spiritual sanctuary for future generations.”

89th National Midyear Exhibition at the Butler
The 89th National Midyear Exhibition presents works by contemporary artists 18 years and older who reside within the United States or its territories. Two-dimensional works in all media, including digital work and photography, are in the exhibition. This year’s juror is Dr. Louis Zona, Director Emeritus of The Butler Institute of American Art.
