Francie Lyshak is a New York based artist whose bold and memorable paintings are at once highly sophisticated and readily accessible to audiences from a broad range of backgrounds.

Lyshak began her journey as a painter in Manhattan’s East Village in the 1970s, interacting with an extraordinary community of artists, musicians, and writers.

During this period, she developed a style of painting that deviated from the prevailing trends of minimalism, Pop, and conceptual art. Combining dreamlike images of dolls and toys with human and animal figures, she set out to explore psychological themes from a defiantly feminist perspective.

This exhibition concentrates on Lyshak’s work of the 1980s and ’90s, providing visitors with an introduction or renewed insight into her visionary combinations of archetypes and icons. Each of these compositions, rendered in oil on canvas in bold, bright strokes, is an attempt at capturing the psyche at a particular moment. Alluding to ancient myth and cultural memory, Lyshak focuses on overlooked or avoided aspects of life, but does so in a manner that is consistently accessible. She allows us to project ourselves into these scenes, which are at once personal and close to universal. Hers is an art of intense feeling that constitutes an arena for mindful contemplation and conveys a message of hope.
