About The Art

In celebration of Black History Month, the Butler is showcasing a unique exhibition from its permanent collection in the Mesaros Gallery.

The Butler Institute of American Art can boast of its rich permanent holdings of African American art. Many stars can be found within this remarkable collection, such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Sam Gilliam, Horace Pippin, Robert Duncanson, Al Bright, Richard Hunt, and Barkley Hendricks. But part of the collection’s appeal can be seen in wonderful works by lesser-known African American artists that help make it quite special. The collection will be displayed in a special exhibition in February, titled “Greatness Revealed: The Art of African Americans from the Butler Collection.” Dr. Dee Banks curated this superb show, which will be in celebration of African American History Month.

This exhibition is sponsored by Dr. Dee Banks and the Youngstown Chapter of Links, Incorporated.
