About The Art
The works in this exhibition are drawn from the permanent collection of the Butler. Certain works might be termed “oddities.” Other works included are significant works yet have been seldom exhibited. An important example of this is a work created by Youngstown-born Ralph Humphrey, whose work moves between realist sculpture and painting. It can be noted that Humphrey is the most celebrated artist having graduated from YSU.
The exhibition of the “unusuals” includes works by Paul Jenkins painted on unusually shaped canvases. John Alexander’s strange party of ghost-like figures and Jules Olitski’s enormously scaled work are centerpieces of this exciting gathering. This once-in-a-lifetime presentation offers a peek at the inventive, mostly hidden, and extremely original works drawn from the Butler vaults.
