Sally Weber and Craig Newswanger: Entangled Attraction, 2022

October 27, 2024 - May 4, 2025
Image of lights that are spinning and seem to leave a trail of glowing light as they spin. The background is very dark, making the lights look as though they are hovering.

About The Art

ENTANGLED ATTRACTION, 2022
with Soundscape composed and produced by Jonathan Crawford

Meet-the-artists on Sunday, October 27, 1-3pm

Like galaxies spinning through space or the chaotic interactions of fundamental particles in the core of stars, Entangled Attraction was inspired by nature’s patterns and complexities, and their effects on the entire system.

Gazing up to watch the spiraling dance of 300 lights, each trail fills our field of vision and leaves traces of their paths suspended in the air. Glints of color, invisible to a camera, are occasionally seen following these arcs of light. “Persistence of vision”, our visual system’s ability to remember light’s image for up to a tenth of a second, captures details the camera cannot see and holds the orbiting trails of light suspended, weightless in the air.

As viewers watch and wonder at the lights, a 7-hour, non-repeating Soundscape by composer, Jonathan Crawford, encourages the viewers to relax submerged in the moment.

The title draws on two concepts in science, “entanglement” and “attractors.”
“Entanglement” in physics is a concept in which particles are linked like twins and affect each other instantly, no matter the distance. In chaos theory, an “attractor” tends to create patterns drawn towards points of attraction in space over time. Though these are specific concepts in science, they also represent our interactions with people, places, and things that engage us in life and integrate us into the spectrum of nature.

Artists: Sally Weber and Craig Newswanger work at the intersection of art and science. They explore fundamental properties of light to expand its experiential qualities in the final installations. Collaborating to produce light installations since 2020, Entangled Attraction was acknowledged at the 2023 CODAsummit Conference for public art and installations in San Jose, CA by the Epson Emerging Artist Award.

Sally Weber (Resonance Studio) uses light illusions, optical and digital holography, video, and dimensional photography to reveal the immediacy of the essential natural forces underlying life and the patterns that interconnect them.

Craig Newswanger (Resonance Studio) is an optical engineering innovator and inventor in optical holography and three-dimensional imagery who designs and produces projects in lighting, sound, digital interfaces, and electronics.

Jonathan Crawford is a musician, composer, sound designer, and producer in San Francisco. He creates music that explores new territory from both a timbral and compositional point of view.

Sally Weber is also represented in the Butler’s Collection.

This exhibition is sponsored by the David Bermant Foundation, who will also be represented at the Sunday reception.
