Film on Art at the Butler
Learn more about the world of art and artists through our Film on Art program. We offer a variety of films, with something for everyone. Check out our seasonal schedule to see which films we are currently showing.
Each Tuesday at noon in the Zona Auditorium located in the Butler’s Beecher Center.
The Film on Art series is presented free of charge and open to the public.
Each film usually is at least an hour to an hour and a half long.

Spring & Summer 2026:
March 31: Jacques-Louis David and His School: This is an interesting lecture on the artist most associated with the Neo-Classicism movement of the 1700s. It is part of the Great Courses series. (30 min.) + Delacroix and Ingres—The Great Dialectic (30 min.)
April 7: Sister Wendy Beckett—The Metropolitan Museum: The knowledgeable and amusing guide leads us on an eclectic tour. (1 hr.)

April 21: Art of the Western World—”An Age of Reason, An Age of Passion.” As society revolted against decadence and corruption, artists turned again to classical Greece. Romantic painters in turn elevated individual expression. (1 hr.)

May 5: The Hudson River and Its Painters. Finally, back to American art and its first homegrown movement. (54 min.)
May 12: Art of the American West. Sometimes called the Rocky Mountain School, members of this group, such as Bierstadt, Remington, and Thomas Moran, create work that allies them with artists of the Hudson River School. (64 min.)
