The Butler partnered with Joseph Hollabaugh and Feedspool Media to create eight videos beginning with an introduction to the museum and explore Colonial Portraiture, Hudson River School, America Impressionism, America Modernism, 20th Century Realism, Abstract Expressionism, 21st Century Abstraction, and Selected Masterworks.
Four Centuries of American Art uses historical and cultural works of art to answer questions about daily life. Whether incorporated into the classroom setting at any grade level or providing enrichment to curious young artists, the series explores artists and works of art that impact the history and culture of America. One is able to analyze art forms, techniques, and artistic styles from a variety of cultures and historical time periods, as well as recognize and discuss the different ways in which art communicates ideas and serves many purposes. At a deeper level, students can investigate works of art and the social and cultural contexts that shaped their creation and explain how individual artists impact cultural developments. Ultimately students develop a personal art criticism method to defend the merits of works of art.
The video series can be viewed on our YouTube channel. Additional support to create the series was provided by the Youngstown Foundation and the Kennedy Family Fund of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley COVID-19 Crisis Relief and Stabilization Fund.
