Temporary Pause on Research Requests

The Butler Institute of American Art is currently undertaking a major collections management initiative, including large-scale file rehousing, documentation review, and related collections infrastructure improvements.

During this period, all external research requests, including object inquiries, collection research, and archival or documentation requests, are temporarily paused. This pause is necessary to ensure the integrity, organization, and security of collection records and archival materials while they are actively being rehoused and stabilized.

All requests received during this time will be securely held for review.

The current anticipated date for resumption of research services is July 7, 2026, pending operational review. This pause period may be extended if needed to ensure the successful completion of ongoing collections work and to maintain proper stewardship standards.

Requests for high-resolution images and reproduction materials may still be accommodated through our imaging provider, Bridgeman Images, who manage the Butler’s digital imaging and reproduction services. They can be contacted directly at: https://www.bridgemanimages.com
